about

"In late 2011 and early 2012 Patrick and I chipped away at the song that would become our most successful to date: The Railroad. The final version you hear on our debut album features a long intrumental introduction, but at one point I had lyrics and a vocal part for it - a twelve line poem about an unforgiving landscape called Sleep.

As we finished the album, I wrote and recorded a mandolin song featuring those lyrics but never really showed it to anyone. I remixed it recently - ten years later - and it really took me back to that time figuring out our sound and making what would become A Long Life of Living. We decided to put it out to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the album because it seemed to fit in that early Goodnight, Texas realm in a way we probably couldn't recreate today if we tried."

lyrics

Where the coldest willows weep
And the fog does slowly creep
Where the fire cannot keep
I will sing myself to sleep

Where the winds so strongly sweep
and the earth can't feed the sheep
In a darkness thick and deep
I will sing myself to sleep

Where the cliffs dark red and steep
Beckon you to come and leap
Where ol’ death does calmly reap
I will sing myself to sleep

I will sing myself to sleep

Goodnight, Texas San Francisco, California

Goodnight, Texas is the garage roots Appalachian collaboration of San Francisco’s Avi Vinocur (formerly of The Stone Foxes) and North Carolina’s Patrick Dyer Wolf.
The band conjures a feeling of a different heavy era in the United States - part 1930s, and part 1860s. The trick: heaviness comes from organic acoustic instruments. In this case, a banjo, acoustic guitar and a 1918 mandolin.
